Employment Opportunities

One of the most challenging issues facing the department today is the recruitment and hiring of quality staff, particularly for the entry-level corrections officer position. Corrections Officer

Corrections officers maintain security and discipline in a county correctional or work release facility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  They supervise inmates at work locations within the facility, in housing units, and transport prisoners.  Work as a corrections officer involves regular exposure to unpredictable conditions and occasionally requires physical effort in restraining and subduing prisoners. What are the basic qualifications?

  1. High school diploma or the equivalent (GED)
  2. At least 18 years old
  3. Valid driver’s license
  4. No criminal history
  5. Typing skills 20 WPM with basic knowledge of keyboard and mouse
  6. Must pass pre-employment physical agility test (see chart below)

What does it pay?

Corrections officer salaries range from $40,877.68 to $53,198.36 a year (depending on length of service) and include paid holidays, vacation, sick and personal days.  Annual rates are higher for ranks such as sergeant, lieutenant and captain.

Are there other career opportunities within the correctional setting?

The corrections setting has many other career opportunities available.  Food service officers, corrections case managers, community corrections officers, drug and alcohol case workers, mental health professionals and health care providers are just a few.

How do I apply for a Corrections Officer position?

  • Go to www.buckscounty.org.  On the far right of the top navigation mouse over the button that is titled "How Do I/Quick Links." The drop down menu includes a link to "Careers." Click on that to get to the Job Requisitions for the week. You may also click the the "How Do/IQuick Links" button, where, under the Service and Information Quick Links column, go down until you see jobs (alphabetical listings). Click on Jobs.

  • That will bring up a list of all county positions currently vacant for that week. If you see a position that interests you and for which you are qualified, please click on the "Apply Now" link at the bottom of the job description page. By clicking the "Apply Now" link it will send you to the County of Bucks online application system BucksRECRUIT which also enables you to take the typing test. You also have the option of visiting any one of our four locations (listed on the website) to complete a County of Bucks online application on a computer kiosk or to complete a paper application. Please arrive at least one hour before close of business in order to allow enough time to complete an application.
