Click here to download a registration form.

This three day workshop covers all the basic processes used by the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works to produce decorative tile, mosaics, quarry tile, and plaster molds, in addition to basic glazing, sagger loading, tile setting and grouting.  There will be an opportunity to tour Fonthill and the Tile Works and see a lecture/slide show on historic and contemporary tile installations.

Limited enrollment and individualized instruction by the staff of the MPTW allows each student to have a hands on experience with many of the above processes. Class size is limited to 8 students.  The workshop cost is $275. A tentative schedule is available by clicking here.

Our next workshops in 2014 will be:

Mar 18 - 20, 2014

Colored Cement Mosaics

In 1904, Henry Chapman Mercer had established a patented technique for making  cement mosaics based on his already patented method of producing mosaics made from clay.  Mercers’ method, similar to that of stained glass, utilized a bold outline separating shapes and colors. Each section was composed of tinted cement.  Separating each color was a line of grout.  Grout was also used to create descriptive details.  Some examples were produced by Mercer and are now in Fonthill Castle.

We recently revived this technique and have introduced it as a one-day workshop.  The method is remarkably simple.  Like the ceramic mosaic technique, a  design is traced onto a slab of clay and indented.  A plaster mold is poured and removed when hard. The indented lines  of the clay are cast as raised  ridges on the plaster mold that act as retaining walls for the colored cement. After oiling the mold so the cement will easily release, a  blend of cement and color  is placed in the now partitioned areas of the mold and when firm, the whole is backed with plain cement and sand. After the cement has set it is released from the mold, grouted and cleaned.

This workshop is limited to 6 students.  Cost for the workshop is $130.  Class will run from 9 am to 5 pm.

Our next workshops will be held:

June 01, 2014
August 24, 2014
