Welcome to the Register of Wills and Clerk of Orphans' Court website. Our  office is located on the sixth floor of the Administration Building at 55 E Court Street, Doylestown, PA 18901. 

About Us Section picture with link to About Us pageThe Register of Wills' principal duties include probating wills and accepting or filing all documents necessary to complete the administration of a decedent's estate. If a person dies without a will, the Register, upon petition, will appoint an administrator of the estate.  The Register is also the agent for the commonwealth of Pennsylvania to collect inheritance tax.

The Register of Wills holds a quasi-judicial position and, if necessary, conducts hearings to determine who should be appointed as executor or administrator of an estate. Some issues brought to a hearing involve issues  like forgery, mental capacity and undue influence. The parties have a right to appeal the Register's decision to the Orphans' Court Divison of the Court of Common Pleas.

 As Clerk of Orphans' Court, our office serves as the filing office and custodian of records for matters involving adoptions, guardianship and estate litigation. The office also issues all marriage licenses for the County of Bucks.

Our office's primary goal is to serve you, especially during the time when you may be grieving the loss of a loved one.

About the Register

 

Donald Petrille, Jr., Esquire is the elected Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans' Court. Mr. Petrille took office on January 3, 2012, bringing with him experience in the private practice of law where he mainly represents small businesses and planning and administering estates. He continues to work to modernize and streamline procedures within the office. The office is moving to electronic records and has places many documents online since Mr. Petrille has taken office. He continues to welcome suggestions from the public as to how the office may better serve their needs.

The Register of Wills is responsible for probating wills and accepting filings necessary to complete the administration of a decedent's estate. If an individual were to pass without a will, the Register, upon petition, will appoint an administrator of the estate. The Register also acts as an agent for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to collect inheritance tax.

As clerk of the Orphans' Court, Mr. Petrille serves the county of Bucks by administering marriage licenses, marriage certificates, and by accepting filings for adoptions, guardianships and incapacitated persons. Further, the office also assists with genealogical searches to help members of the community trace back their heritage within Bucks County.

The Honorable Donald Petrille also holds a number of esteemed positions throughout the Commonwealth through his capacity to serve on state associations as the Register  of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans' Court of Bucks County. He is currently the President and Legislative Analyst for the Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans' Court Association of Pennsylvania, a member of the Pennsylvania State Association of Elected County Officials, member of the Pennsylvania Extension (4H) Board, member of the Bucks County Genealogical Society, founder and facilitator of the bucks County Orphans Court Advisory Committee, member of the Bucks County Estate Planning Council, and a member of the Association of Pennsylvania Courts Judicial Application Development Committee.
