POSITION SUMMARY:

Receives non-emergency and emergency calls for service from the general public; processes these calls in compliance with the local, state and national standards of care, in a correct and efficient manner; and transmits calls to the proper emergency service provider as soon as possible.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Answers incoming calls by telephone or radio; screens and prioritizes calls; and relays all necessary information to the proper authority for immediate action.
  • Serves as a liaison between citizens and governmental agencies, as well as the liaison between different governmental agencies.
  • Provides emergency medical pre-arrival instructions to the public or system users when necessary and in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Maintains a constant accurate record of every system user on duty in regard to locations, availability and safety.
  • Provides necessary information to system users upon request.
  • Maintains accurate records of all calls and messages including vehicle movements via the computer-aided dispatch system and related equipment.
  • Maintains file of wanted vehicles and provides this information to the National Crime Information Center so that police officers are aware of stolen vehicles, the CLEAN (Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network) computer system and related equipment.
  • Receives and records movements of police vehicles in order to handle emergency situations in an effective manner and in compliance with departmental policy.
  • Maintains knowledge of county geographies, borough and township lines and boundaries as well as adjacent county line and boundaries.This includes emergency medical service, fire and police districts.
  • Sends teletype messages to other governmental agencies of crimes that occurred in the county so that crimes may be solved via the CLEAN system.
  • Maintains current training certifications as required by local, state and national standards of care for public safety communications center personnel.
  • Assists in the training of new personnel as assigned by supervisor or management.
  • Subject to 24-hour call for emergency service and overtime assignments.
  • Reports unusual conditions or questionable items to the supervisor.
  • Obeys all county and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Obeys all safety rules and regulations.
  • Performs similar or related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have fulfilled all of the requirements of the Dispatcher Trainee position.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and professionally with the public and system users during non-emergency and emergency situations.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 30 wpm.
  • Ability to speak clearly and read and write English.
  • Ability to understand messages from multiple input sources; perform multiple tasks while operating computer, radio and telephone equipment; and make prudent decisions based upon policy and procedure, training and experience and sound judgment.
