Consumer Tips

FIREWOOD SALES

  • Firewood is sold by the measurement of a cord, or a fraction thereof
  • A cord is 128 cubic feet
  • Stack the wood 4 feet wide, 4 feet high by 8 feet in length
  • Multiply 4 by 4 by 8 = 128 cubic feet, or one cord
  • A receipt is required by law
  • The receipt should contain the buyer's and seller's name and address and delivery date
  • The receipt should also show the price paid, the number of cords, and the type of wood
  • If you think you have been shorted, contact your local weights and measures office

MULCH SALES

  • Before buying or accepting delivery of mulch, check the load for debris
  • If delivered, measure the truck's bed width times length times height in feet
  • Level the load of mulch while it is in the truck. Some settling is acceptable
  • Divide your total by 27 to figure out cubic yards
  • Example: 3 feet high times 3 feet long times 3 feet wide = 27, divided by 27 = 1 cubic yard of mulch
  • Always get a receipt with the name, address and phone number of the business
