Support Specialist

SUMMARY: Performs various support casework and/or support processing duties as may be assigned. Duties may include, but are not limited to, typing/keyboarding data or correspondence on a typewriter and/or computer; contact with the public, case clients or agencies (contact may be performed in person, office counter or telephone or written communication). Researches case information and assists in support payment account maintenance, account audits, account adjustments and other similar or related duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • May be assigned to various professional staff, to a specific workload or caseload or to certain types of support case processing activities either working individually or as part of a team.
  • As needed, may perform intake related client interviews and preparation of appropriate support petitions, parent locate requests, letters, etc.
  • May research needed case information and follow-up within an established office procedural framework.
  • If assigned, may perform support payment account maintenance duties and support payment account adjustment and/or audit duties.
  • If assigned, may perform parent locate research activities and related duties aimed at locating absent parents for the purpose of establishing child support orders, spousal support orders, paternity or enforcement of an existing support order entered by the Court.
  • As necessary, types letters, forms on a typewriter and/or computer terminal.
  • Enters/retrieves data on the statewide child support enforcement computer (PACSES) and related systems as well as on the County computer system.
  • Answers phone inquiries from the public, clients’ attorneys and other agencies or offices. As needed, gives routine office procedural information (high volume, stressful work environment). Case client contact may be performed in person, office counter or by phone or written communication.
  • Other duties may be assigned as staffing and business demands dictate.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 35 wpm.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to learn and perform complex support case processing tasks and related clerical tasks within the framework of established office procedures.
  • Ability to learn/use the statewide child support computer system (PACSES) as well as the County computer system.
  • Ability to self-start, organize and complete work without constant supervision.
  • Ability to work effectively with other public and private agencies and institutions.
  • Ability to work independently on difficult or complex clerical tasks without constant direct supervision.
  • Ability to plan and organize assigned work duties and work priorities within established parameters.
  • Possess a working knowledge of and experience in using computers (Windows 95 based system).
  • Working knowledge of basic math (i.e. calculating figures and amounts by basic addition, subtraction, multiplication or division).
  • Working knowledge of proper business English and spelling.
  • Ability to compose letters, forms and reports as directed.
  • Ability to work in a high volume, often stressful, office work environment.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment, courtesy and tact when in contract with the public and clients who may be under a high degree of stress.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in a polite and professional manner.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
