Bristol Man Gets 5.5 to 11 Years for Robberies of Delivery Men

June 1, 2016

A man who robbed and assaulted three food delivery men in Bristol was sentenced this morning to serve five and one-half to 11 years in state prison.

"These were extremely violent crimes,” Bucks County President Judge Jeffrey L. Finley told the defendant, Ronald Smith III, in imposing the sentence.

Smith, 24, of Bristol, pleaded guilty Feb. 16 in the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas to three counts of aggravated assault and three counts of robbery in which serious bodily injury was inflicted – all felonies of the first degree.

On July 29, 2015, Smith placed a food delivery order by phoning the Carnival Pizza Restaurant in Bristol, giving an address at the Green Lane Apartments in Bristol Township. When driver Daniel Zackowski arrived, Smith pointed a gun in his face and demanded money.

Zackowski cooperated but Smith, his face covered, beat the driver in the head with his gun and fist. Zackowski fell to the ground and Smith kicked the victim in the face, rendering him unconscious and causing multiple injuries that required hospital treatment. Smith escaped with $340.

On Aug. 10, 2015, Smith attacked a driver making a food delivery from the Italian Family Restaurant to a residence on Spring Street in Bristol Borough. When the victim, Gregory Stevens, arrived, Smith struck him in the head with a rock, knocking Stevens unconscious.

Smith then took more than $100 from the victim. Stevens was taken to a hospital with head wounds that required more than 16 staples to close.

On Aug. 23, 2015, Smith phoned in a food order to the Xin Rong Chinese Restaurant for delivery to the Green Lane Apartments. After entering an apartment building, the driver, Gong Ping Chen, was attacked by Smith in a hallway.

Smith struck Chen in the head with a tire iron. Chen dropped the food he was carrying and ran from the building toward his car. Smith ran after him and beat Chen three more times with the tire iron, breaking the victim’s kneecap as he tried to rob him.

Smith admitted his involvement to police. In court, he blamed his behavior on a longstanding addiction to drugs, including heroin. “I was in a real bad spot in life,” he said.

Finley responded that few heroin-related crimes involve such violence. Smith’s crimes were not spontaneous acts, the judge added, but rather required a measure of planning and intent.

Finley imposed identical five and one-half- to 11-year sentences for each of the three robberies, ordering them to run concurrently. He also ordered a concurrent 10 years of probation on the three aggravated assault counts, and ordered Smith to pay the victims a total of $7,237.42 in restitution.

The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Christopher Rees and investigated by Detective Douglas Slemmer of the Bristol Township Police.

“It is a pleasure to work with Bristol Township and Bristol Borough’s finest,” Rees said. “I’d like to especially single out the diligence and tenacity of Detective Doug Slemmer, who refused to give up on this case and ultimately arrested the man responsible.”

Approved for release by Robert James, Deputy District Attorney.

This assignment masters news is really surprising for me. I can’t even think that somebody can do this type of crime. This is really big crime and I think they should punish such people even punish for life time jail. Such crimes should be prevented and the government can do something for it.

Organize Technologies Digital Marketing Agency I think it is the ideal punishment for what he had done. He had done the same offence for three times and it cannot be tolerated by any means. Authorities have done well to catch him and give the right punishment he deserved.
