Commissioners Urge Senators To Back Flood
Study In Senate
The Bucks County Commissioners called upon United States Senators
Arlen Specter and Rick Santorum to get behind a bill to authorize
a study of flooding along the Delaware River.
The commissioners noted legislation introduced in the U.S. House
of Representatives by 8th District Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick passed
with overwhelming bipartisan support on July 14. (406-14)
In letters to the senators, the commissioners cited the devastation and multi-million
dollar cost to homes and businesses following two floods on the Delaware within
seven months, the most recent in April, 2005.
"As county commissioners, we have witnessed the damage and heartbreak
caused by flooding . . . we called upon our congressman and the governor
to support a flood mitigation study as soon as possible," they wrote.
To the senators, the commissioners said, "We are confident you will
recognize the urgency of our request and provide the leadership necessary
to win passage of the flood mitigation bill in the Senate."
Bucks County communities from Riegelsville to Morrisville were affected
by Delaware River flooding in September, 2004 and April, 2005.
