Bucks County Has Record Year in Collection
of Household Hazardous Waste
Over 4,900 Bucks County residents participated in the 2005 Household Hazardous Waste program held at five collection sites throughout the county this past summer. This is an increase of 800 residents from the previous year. The Household Hazardous Waste program is administered by the Bucks County Planning Commission.
A total of 442,734 pounds (221 tons) of material was turned in for recycling. This includes approximately 2,000 computer systems and related electronic components. The computer equipment is sent to a recycling firm and disassembled for recycling. Computers in working order are refurbished and sold to entities looking for affordable equipment.
Participants are asked to complete a brief survey to establish their municipality, how they learned about the program, and what type of material they brought for recycling.
In Bucks County, the Household Hazardous Waste program is fiscally supported by the Bucks County Commissioners, all 54 municipalities, the Pennsylvania DEP, as well as private contributors. Keeping the cost of the program as low as possible is significantly helped by the efforts of many volunteers who assist with traffic control, administer surveys, and distribute educational material.
