Bucks County Department of Corrections Completes
Courthouse Garage Community Service Project

In a mutually beneficial effort designed to spruce up one of Bucks County’s busiest public spaces, a detail of minimum-custody inmates completed 240 hours of multi-deck cleaning at the courthouse parking garage. The project took place during the weekends of July 28-30 and Aug. 4-6.

The garage-cleaning included 10 inmates working four hours apiece over the six-day span. County Director of Corrections Harris Gubernick called the thorough garage cleansing a “type of restitution to the community which is also victimized by an offense.”

“This project is a concrete example of the cooperative spirit that exists within our county government,” said Commissioners’ Board Chairman James F. Cawley, Esq. “We will continue to explore ways to integrate community service commitments into our day-to-day operations.”

Community Service Project WorkersStarting with the top deck, the workers filled 150 plastic bags with debris that had accumulated over recent months. Using shovels, brooms and rakes, they combed the facility’s multiple decks, which were unoccupied by vehicles during non-business hours. Last weekend, the project was expanded to include several courthouse satellite lots.

“Community service is a critical component of our system, and these are classified inmates who are assigned to these types of projects,” Gubernick explained.

According to Gubernick, the project was one of many that minimum-custody inmates routinely complete around the county.
