COUNTY COMMISSIONERS SALUTE BUCKS COUNTY CONSERVATION DISTRICT SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

As the 2006-07 school year approaches, the Bucks County Commissioners are proud to recognize this summer’s three recipients of the Harold Haldeman Conservation Leadership School Scholarship. Haldeman was fifth-generation county farmer who passed away in May, 2002, for whom the scholarship is named.

After submitting applications to Bucks County Conservation District (BCCD) District Manager John A. Thomas and Environmental Educator Mary Ellen Noonan, Matthew Atkinson of Jamison, Spencer Magloff of Furlong and Alyson Brokaw of Upper Black Eddy were selected to spend a week at Penn State’s Conservation Leadership School.

The school’s hands-on curriculum includes forest, wildlife and water conservation education, career preparation guidance, leadership training and in-depth analysis of the challenging issues lying ahead for our native fisheries.

“The Harold Haldeman scholarships provide a magnificent opportunity for young students who are interested in conservation-related careers,” said Bucks County Commissioner Sandra A. Miller, the BCCD’s commissioner director. “Haldeman should be remembered as a lifelong conservation advocate and dedicated steward of our county’s natural resources.”

Following their one-week residential program at the leadership school, which is set in a “700-acre outdoor classroom,” each scholarship recipient was invited to a BCCD meeting to deliver a short presentation about their experience.

“Studying fish and fish hatcheries is my favorite hobby, besides hunting,” said Atkinson, a student at Archbishop Wood in Warminster who aspires to become a hatchery manager.

Each year, the BCCD accepts scholarship applications for the leadership school’s summer program. For more information and to download an application, go to the website www.bucksccd.org, or contact the BCCD directly at 215-345-7577.
