Bucks County Emergency Management Agency Says Family Preparedness Key in Anticipation of Weekend Storms

The Bucks County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) has received word from the National Weather Service that our area can expect two to four inches of rainfall this holiday weekend, with possible flash flooding in poor drainage and low areas. Most of the heavy rain will come Friday and taper off by Saturday afternoon. According to the report, there are no factors to indicate the storm will stagnate in the area, allowing it to cross through and leave within 24 hours. Although heavy flooding is not expected, EMA Coordinator John Dougherty says the best advice is to be prepared.

“Families should maintain a ‘go bag’ in case they are asked to evacuate. You can stay informed by listening or watching the local news. And if you are asked to evacuate, it is for your own safety, so we urge compliance with local law enforcement officials.” Dougherty says if evacuations are ordered, residents will be told where to go. Some residents in flood-prone areas along the Delaware may receive evacuation updates through the county’s Community Alert Network, CAN, a system that can make hundreds of phone calls with safety information in a matter of minutes.

When monitoring the situation, a flood WATCH means a flood is possible in our area; a flood WARNING means flooding is already occurring or will occur soon.

Recommended items for a family go bag include:

  • Prescription medication and glasses
  • Infant formula and other baby necessities
  • Pet food and extra water
  • A battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • Family documents such as insurance information, identification documents and family contact information
  • Extra clothing and toiletries
  • Games and activities for children
  • Maps in case alternate routes need to be taken.

In addition, ensure your family has enough fuel in your vehicle.
