Bucks County Commissioners' Chairman Jim Cawley Serves as Fire Marshal for a Day

In a continued effort to experience Bucks County government from an inside perspective that already has included stints as a weights and measurement specialist, voter registration volunteer and adult probation officer, commissioners’ Chairman Jim Cawley spent last Friday, Sept. 8, as a Bucks County Fire Marshal.

During the morning, Cawley observed as Assistant Fire Marshal Mark Kramer conducted a Fire Professionals Aiding Children (PAC) interview. Fire PAC is a juvenile fire-setter intervention program that serves 45-50 families annually. Cawley witnessed the evaluation process as Kramer interviewed a parent and child. The program is designed to help protect the child, family and community from the ongoing threat of fire-setting.

Commissioner Cawley with Fire Inspector John Grundy“I am continually amazed at the diversity of our county government responsibilities,” said Commissioner Cawley, “Our employees are charged with protecting and serving the public in many arenas. They perform wonderfully, making a difference everyday.”

During the afternoon, Cawley assisted in the fire safety inspection of the Bucks County Health Department in Doylestown. Working side-by-side with Fire Inspector John Gundy, the duo traversed every room and corridor of the building. All fire extinguishers were inspected and recorded for a data base containing information about 1,800 extinguishers throughout all county-owned facilities.

Cawley and Gundy also checked public rooms, offices, storage areas and hallways for obstructions and overcrowding. Additionally, they examined electrical outlets for exposed wires and overloads.

Future posts Cawley will occupy include security screener.
