Commissioners Help Local Clergy Recognize National Day of Prayer During Courtyard Ceremony
As a clear blue sky framed the midday proceedings, Bucks County Commissioners Charles H. Martin and James F. Cawley, Esq. joined Pastors Scott Jackson and Bob Schuman of Warrington Fellowship Church, Pastor Jay Burgman of Hilltown Baptist Church, Pastor Corbin Seltzer of Palisades Community Bible Church today on the courthouse lawn in honor of the National Day of Prayer.
Chairman Martin focused his remarks on the importance of family values. He also remembered Doylestown Marine Travis Manion, the 26-year-old Naval Academy graduate who was killed in Iraq April 29. Additionally, the chairman urged an assemblage of over 100 to keep the victims of last month’s Virginia Tech shootings in their thoughts and prayers.
Commissioner Cawley detailed the history of the National Day of Prayer, tracing its significance through Presidents Truman and Reagan. He also stressed the importance of faith and belief in everyone’s life.
The prayer sessions included one for our nation and its leaders, led by Pastor Burgman; one for families, led by Pastor Seltzer, and one for the Armed Forces, led by Pastor Schuman. In addition, guitarist Chip Mergott led the gathering in the singing of “America the Beautiful.”
The National Day of Prayer celebrates faith as part of the fabric of our country, no matter the particular belief. Participants are asked to give thanks for the freedoms we enjoy in America. Prayers for our nation and its leaders, for those who serve our nation, and for our families are integral parts of the celebration.
