Commissioners Urge Federal Lawmakers to Support Port of Bucks through Delaware River Dredging
Letter Sent to Senators Specter and Casey and Representative Murphy
The Bucks County Board of Commissioners, in an effort to support the Port of Bucks, this week forwarded a letter to US Senators Arlen Specter and Robert Casey and US Representative Patrick Murphy, asking them to exert pressure on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to complete an upcoming dredging project of the Delaware River Trenton Federal navigation channel and the Fairless Turning Basin.
“The Delaware River dredging operations are essential to the continuity of operations within the Port of Bucks, which is undergoing a major corporate renaissance,” wrote commissioners Charles H. Martin, chairman, James F. Cawley and Sandra A. Miller. “More than 5,000 employees rely on the port.”
Corporations regularly using the Port of Bucks and the Fairless Turning Basin as a primary commerce lifeline include Waste Management, Kinder Morgan, the Silvi Companies and Gamesa Wind.
“If the (dredging) project is delayed, we believe the Port of Bucks will suffer adverse consequences,” the commissioners wrote, referring to shipping restrictions that could result if the Delaware River does not have adequate channel depths.
