Department of Health Issues Selenium Toxicity Advisory
“Total Body Formula” and “Total Body Mega Formula” Produced in 2008 Recalled due to Adverse Health Effects
Recently the company that manufactures “Total Body Formula” and ‘Total Body Mega Formula” have recalled these supplements produced in 2008 due to adverse health effects of selenium toxicity experienced by consumers.
Selenium, a naturally occurring mineral essential to the body, is most commonly found in foods such as meat, fish, grain, cereal and nuts. These natural sources are sufficient to provide the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of selenium, although it is added to many supplements to ensure that the essential minerals and vitamins are available for good health. The Food and Drug Administration set RDA guidelines to help people adjust their dietary intake. At this time, it appears that selenium was added to this supplement at higher levels, which are actually harmful to the body.
Short-term oral exposure to high concentrations of selenium may cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Chronic oral exposure to high concentrations of selenium compounds can produce a disease called selenosis, which may include hair loss, nail brittleness, and neurological abnormalities (such as numbness and other odd sensations in the hands, arms, legs, or feet). Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rashes, and irritability have also been reported. There are no expected long-term effects after high levels of dietary exposure, however, adverse effects, such as hair loss and nail brittleness may take weeks to be reversed.
If you have “Total Body Formula” or “Total Body Mega Formula” in your home from 2008, the Bucks County Department of Health is advising discontinuation of the product, and returning to the point of purchase or throwing it out in an outside trash can.
Consumers who have been taking the products and have experienced adverse reactions should consult their health care professional or call the Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
