Bucks County Commissioners Join Local Officials to Re-Open Bridge 223 in Nockamixon
The Bucks County Commissioners officially re-opened county Bridge No. 223 to traffic on June 10th with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The bridge was reconstructed after being damaged by high storm water from the Gallows Run which flows underneath. The historical beauty of the stone, double-arch bridge was maintained while ensuring state-of-the-art engineering.
The commissioners approved the $591,000 contract for repairs which began in October 2007. The original marble stone from 1826 is now inlaid in the new bridge next to the 2008 bronze marker.
Commissioner Jim Cawley stated how important the bridge is to the local community, both for its historic value and for its everyday use as a safe way to enter and exit Rt. 611. The bridge is used by approximately 100 cars a day, primarily by the local community.
Commissioner Charley Martin noted that he and Commissioner Cawley were proud that for the first time all 115 of the county-owned bridges are open to traffic.
Joining with the commissioners to cut the ribbon were Chief Operating Officer David Sanko and several Nockamixon Township supervisors. Also present were members of the county public works department, and engineering and construction firms.
Bridge No. 223 is located between Rt. 611 (Old Easton Rd.) and Ealer Hill Road in Kintnersville, Nockamixon Township.
