Commissioners Join Veterans to Recognize 25th Anniversary of Vietnam War Memorial
Representing his fellow commissioners, Bucks County Commissioner James F. Cawley, Esq. joined county Military/Veterans Affairs Director Dan Fraley and dozens of Vietnam War veterans and family members for a solemn ceremony of remembrance June 20 in the courtyard of the county courthouse. During the event, which was conducted in a steady rainstorm, the names of the 133 Bucks County residents who lost their lives were read aloud, many of them by siblings or close relatives. Also honored were three Bucks Countians who were missing in action during the war, two of whom remain unaccounted for today.
During his keynote remarks, Commissioner Cawley spoke of the unwavering commitment displayed by those who fought and represented America during the war. “It doesn’t matter why they were there,” he observed. “They paid the ultimate sacrifice in honor of their country.” Commissioner Cawley also thanked the relatives of those who were honored, proudly noting that they are part of an array of courtyard memorials that also include the Civil War, the World War I fountain, World War II, Korea (which will hold its annual observance on Saturday, July 25, 2009), and the Hometown Heroes banners which recognize those killed during the War on Terror in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The ceremony also featured the unveiling of plaque commemorating the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam War memorial, which took place on June 16, 1984. A group of dedicated volunteers raised $250,000 over a four-and-a-half year period to secure the funding for the memorial. Both Commissioner Cawley and Mr. Fraley saluted that effort, which consisted of more than 90 percent private fundraising. In a letter dated June 12, 1984, President Ronald Reagan “welcomed the opportunity to salute the hard work, initiative and personal devotion which brought this important project to fruition.”
