Bucks County Commissioners Urge Awareness of Heat’s Effect on County Seniors

The Board of Bucks County Commissioners, Chairman Charles H. Martin, Vice-Chairman James F. Cawley, Esq. and Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia, LCSW, reminds seniors that extreme hot weather can cause serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Though everyone should take precautions, seniors are especially vulnerable to the effects of heat. The Bucks County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) advises that the best precaution during a heat wave is to remain indoors with an air-conditioner or in a ventilated room with a fan. Unless restricted, residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water and/or non-alcoholic beverages to prevent dehydration.

The public is encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, friends and family members. If you or someone you know are experiencing symptoms such as faintness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, heavy sweating, etc., CONSULT A PHYSICIAN IMMEDIATELY. Also, fans may be available through the Area Agency on Aging for senior residents of Bucks County (age 60+) who do not have a fan or air conditioner. On Friday, July 31, starting at 1:30 p.m., PECO will distribute fans to seniors at the Bristol Township Senior Center, 2501 Bath Rd. The telephone number for the Center is 215-785-6322.

“We encourage seniors to visit one of Bucks County’s 13 senior community centers located throughout the county to enjoy activities, lunches and air conditioning.  Please call your local center for specific information,” said Commissioner Chairman Charles H. Martin. For more information or assistance, please call:
