Bucks County Commissioners Stress Awareness of Heat’s Effect on County Seniors

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the Delaware Valley from 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 23 through Thursday evening, June 24. The Board of Bucks County Commissioners reminds seniors that extreme hot weather can cause serious heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion. Though everyone should take precautions, seniors are especially vulnerable to the effects of prolonged heat. The Bucks County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) advises that the best precaution during a heat wave is to remain indoors with an air-conditioner or in a ventilated room with a fan. Unless restricted, drink plenty of water and/or non-alcoholic beverages to prevent dehydration.

The public is encouraged to check on elderly neighbors, friends and family members. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms such as faintness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, heavy sweating, etc., consult a physician immediately. Also, fans may be available through the Area Agency on Aging for senior residents of Bucks County (age 60+) who do not have a fan or air conditioner.  The elderly may call 215-348-0510 for help during this period of extreme heat.

“We encourage seniors to visit one of Bucks County’s 13 senior community centers located throughout the county to enjoy activities, lunches and air conditioning.  Please call your local center for specific information,” said Commissioner Chairman Charles H. Martin.
