Commissioners Receive “Good Friend Award” From Friends of Washington Crossing Group

On Friday, November 19, 2010, representatives of the Bucks County Department of Corrections accepted the Friends of Washington Crossing “Good Friend Award” on behalf of county Commissioners Charles H. Martin, chairman, James F. Cawley, Esq. and Diane M. Ellis-Marseglia, LCSW. The award recognized the Department of Corrections’ recent efforts to assist with community service involving the 500-acre Washington Crossing Park. The award ceremony took place in the Durham Boat Barn along the banks of the Delaware River.

The project – a commissioners’ initiative involving the Department of Corrections administration - deployed minimum-security offenders from the Bucks County Community Corrections Centers, who began working at the park during June, 2010. Between June and October, offenders completed 6,594 hours of community service throughout the park. By November 19, that number had climbed to more than 7,000 hours. The work includes major grounds cleanup along the Delaware River, as well as the Thompson-Neely House and various other building and houses that are part of this historic area.

“I think this project is a wonderful use of this kind of labor,” Chairman Martin stated. “It has really served the community well. They have put in thousands of hours at the park, and they are to be commended for the work they’ve done.”
