County Health Dept. to Spray Adult Mosquitoes Monday, Aug. 28 in Richland Twp., Perkasie Borough & Warminster Twp.

August 24, 2017

On Monday, August 28, the Bucks County Mosquito Control Program will conduct an ultra-low volume (ULV) spray operation to reduce high populations of mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus in areas of Richland Township, Perkasie Borough and Warminster Township. The Warminster spray will include the following streets: Bellemeade, Brennan, Boxwood and Cheryl drives as well as Olden, Stub, Aster, Rosemore, Tulip, Dahlia, Garden, Brookdale, Violet and Roberts roads and Boxwood Circle. Also scheduled for treatment in Warminster are Darrah, Nassau, Barness, Irma, Dixon, Dager, Glazer and Gorson roads, Log College Drive and Little Lane.  In Richland Township, Health Department staff will spray Veterans Park. In Perkasie Borough, the spray will target the ice skating rink and woods around to the dog park area in Menlo Park.

The treatments will be administered via truck-mounted equipment, and ATV mounted equipment.  The spray will begin at dusk.  The equipment dispenses Duet, a Dual-Action Adulticide at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre.  The product is designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact on non-target insects and the environment.

Certain mosquito species carry the West Nile virus, which can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

Weather conditions and other unexpected events could delay or cancel this spray operation. If conditions do not allow application on Monday, August 28, 2017, then Tuesday, August 29, 2017 will be the backup date.
