Bucks County had another successful medication collection event on Saturday, Oct. 27, collecting 9,843 pounds of unneeded, unused and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications at 50 public locations.

That amount pushed the county's total collections to 117,167 pounds since the collections began here in 2010 -- the highest total throughout Pennsylvania.

All medications collected for safe disposal are incinerated, and are overseen by law enforcement officers from the point of collection to incineration.

It is important to follow safe practices with all medications. This includes storing medications properly, taking medications only as prescribed and safely disposing of both prescribed and over-the-counter medications by participating in biannual collection events or by using a drop box located near you.

In case you missed the collection event on Saturday, you may dispose of unwanted medications freely and anonymously at one of the 34 permanent drop off sites located in police stations throughout Bucks County.

In most locations, all medications will be accepted, including pills, capsules, ointments, liquids, nasal sprays, inhalers and pet medications. Needles and illicit drugs will not be accepted. Use the Bucks Promise for Youth & Communities blogspot and click the link Drug Medication Collection Boxes on the right for the permanent box site locations.
